What are Ceramides?

Ceramides are a class of lipids (fats) that are essential components of the skin’s outermost layer, the stratum corneum. They act as a protective barrier, helping to retain moisture and prevent water loss. The Ceramide Trio: NP, AP, and EOP

Within the ceramide family, three types are particularly noteworthy: NP, AP, and EOP.

  1. Ceramide NP (Non-Polar):
    • Chemical Nature: Long-chain fatty acids linked to sphingosine.
    • Key Role: Forms the lipid bilayer, the fundamental structure of the skin’s barrier.

  3. Ceramide EOP (Ester-Polar):
    • Chemical Nature: Contains a polar head group with an ester bond, often linked to fatty acids and sphingosine.
    • Key Role: Aids in lipid organization and cell differentiation.
    • Benefits:
      • Promotes skin cell turnover
      • Improves skin elasticity
      • Reduces the appearance of scars
